Selenium
"Some
years ago a lovely Italian lady rang me, very upset. She was 44 years old
and pregnant with her seventh, much
wanted child. The hospital was pressing her re amniocentesis, because of
her age and the risk of Down's syndrome.
She was frightened to submit to the test in case she lost the baby. Down's
Syndrome has been associated with
low levels of selenium in American
research papers. I suggested I sent her the papers, and we sent hair to
the lab.
The chart came back with an excellent level of selenium. We discussed
provisions for Down's syndrome children,
and she decided to bypass the test. In due course her seventh son arrived
in very good order at 7lb 15oz."
